Simplify to create change

6/20/2020

I’m reminded of an event from one year ago today. We had just finished a quick trip to Vegas to see Aerosmith then detoured to the Grand Canyon before heading home.

Little did we know, one year later we wouldn’t have that opportunity.

But we have a different opportunity.

Most of us are slowly emerging from our homes to stores, restaurants and starting to return back to our place of employment, offices, etc.

Some of the conversations that I’ve been having with people are those of concern and frustration getting back their normal routine after experiencing the freedom being able to work from home.

I get it. I really do.

We know from experience that to make drastic and lasting change, you need to simplify.

COVID has taught us that. It taught us to simplify quickly.
So now we are thinking what can we do to keep that feeling?

That experience.

That freedom.

Keep the simplest tasks a priority and keep them consistent.
So you need to ask yourself, what are the simplest tasks for you?

Maybe it’s:

🦋Getting up 15-30 minutes earlier to get some movement in.
🦋Setting out your workout clothes the night before
🦋Packing your lunch the night before
🦋Taking a few minutes to sit quietly, journal, visualize your outcome on your intentions. Maybe take that outside and listen to the nature.

We’ve learned that we can pivot and make things work during this time.

We’ve learned what we want to keep in our lives

We’ve learned what we don’t want to keep in our lives.

Now that we’ve had that awakening, it’s time to make some decisions.

If you get off track or feel overwhelmed, or if you catch yourself rushing, don't panic.

Simply pause.

Relax.

Reboot.

And go back to keeping it simple and mastering the basics.

Habits can make or break us...

“There’s no better way to get your mind right than waking up before daybreak and clanking some iron, stretching the muscles, elevated the heart rate, and changing the physiology of the body.” – Todd Durkin, Get Your Mind Right.

How do we become a person of routine?

Having a routine is another way of saying that you’ve established certain customs or patterns of behavior, which are better known as habits. Everybody has habits whether they know them or not.

Do we tend to stay up late, sleep in, then rush off to work? Only to find, at the end of the day, we’re too tired from the drive home and its dinner then family and back to bed?

Or maybe in our free time we spend it scrolling on social media, playing a game on the phone or watching Netflix…

How can we flip the switch to creating habits that are going to get us to our goals?

To help us lead a healthy life.

To help us stay on the right track.

I’m going to share a few that my mentor and Coach Todd has outlined in his book:
  1. Make a commitment, and when you do, stick to it. So many of us go through life without committing to anything. We take life as it comes. Or we’re too busy to do anything beyond the basics that I described above.
  2. Be a thermostat, not a thermometer. A thermometer has the single purpose of telling you the temperature of the environment. It it’s hot or freezing outside, the thermometer will tell you if it’s in the 90’s or freezing. A thermostat, regulates the environment. It’s you who decides how hot or how cold, and you can control the temperature. Constantly monitor your surrounding and making adjustments. Influence your surroundings instead of letting them influence you.
  3. Be prepared to do things people never see. Those who set their alarms at 4:30am, splash water on their face and head out to exercise. Success is rooted in unseen, uncelebrated sacrifices. But talk to those who get up early to exercise, and they will tell you that the results speak for themselves. They get their minds right because they decided they would do something to improve their lives and acted upon those commitments.
  4. Remind yourself that it takes time to establish new habits. I’m not really a believer in it takes 21 days to create a habit. As I’ve mentioned before, change itself is a skill. Sometime we need to prepare for the preparation of even thinking about change. Sometimes it’s a lightbulb moment and we can start right away. Other times, it takes some more convincing of ourselves that we can even be successful with it.
  5. Don’t turn your phone on right after you wake up. That time is so precious to your morning routine and belongs to your body, mind and soul.
  6. Start your day by taking ten to twenty minutes to nurture your soul. This could be quite meditation, prayer and/or journaling.
  7. Journal to quiet your mind and establish your goals. This is not a to-do list. This talking to yourself in a language that is positive, visualizing what you see ahead. Once I started doing this every day, things started to unfold and open up more and more.
  8. When you’re done nurturing your soul, get a move on. Despite what you may think, a quick 20-30 is all you need to get the blood pumping, the feel good hormones firing and setting the tone for the day. There are so many things you can do at home with just body weight or minimal equipment, not to mention heading out for a quick walk.
  9. Eat a healthy breakfast. I won’t get into specifics here but coffee, bagels and donuts won’t cut it.
  10. Create a PM routine. Your morning routine will only be successful if you are prepared the night before. Review your journal, power down the electronics, read something inspirational, leave your phone in the kitchen at night (get a cheap old fashioned alarm clock if you need to), get your clothes ready, maybe even prep your lunch for the next day, and don’t hit that snooze button!

I hope these tips help you establish a routine to eliminate your limits, overwhelm and frustration and on the road to a healthy and balanced life!

Peeling back the layers...

Working in the fitness industry for over 15 years, I can say that one of the biggest mental hurdles holding people back from real success is a limiting belief system.

Maybe it was the way you were raised, or the people surrounding you, or a lack of self-confidence, or even fear. If you nurture limiting beliefs, they’ll rule your behavior and your life.

To attack your limiting belief systems, realize that you must work on strengthening your mindset first.

If your mental, emotional, and spiritual side (your inner self) is out of shape, you’ll never find the success in life you hope to find – no matter how hard you work your body.

Most people won’t take the time to do this and instead will just do the training program and nutrition tips looking for the “answer.”

These same people will get only a few weeks into the program and lose motivation, and they will be destined to fail because they never took the time to examine WHY they wanted to change in the first place and, more important, what they were willing to do to achieve that change.

You are looking for something.

Is it a feeling you’re after? Is it a look you want?

Whatever it is, it is within you.

Start to peel back the layers to get to who you really want to become.
Set aside some alone time in the next day or two to write and let your soul sing. Without considering whether it’s realistic, write down what you absolutely want to achieve during this journey.

No limits! Be very specific.

Define what becoming fit means to YOU. Mentally, physically and spiritually fit.
For some it may mean moving without pain, having enough energy to play with the grand kids, or even to get through a day without crashing on the couch afterwards.
Perhaps it is to get through the day without feeling the overwhelm of everything you need to do

...to live the life you desire

...to have peace, simplicity and balance

Spend some time with it and be true to yourself.

Shoot me a message if you need help mapping this out!

Today is the day!!

Today is the day!!

For years I’ve heard:

I’ll start Monday...

I’ll start next month...

I’ll start on the first...

We all know we can “start” anytime we want. Any day. Any month.
Yet, we continually romanticize something magical about starting on the first.

On a Monday.

Next month.
  • Is it our unconscious telling us that we might fail so we procrastinate to avoid failure?
  • Is it that we’re afraid of starting and not finishing?
  • Is it that we’re not committed to ourselves fully?
  • Do we get overwhelmed with what to do?
  • Feeling like we have to cut out everything we love to make the change (pizza ).

Today is the day to grab your journal and create the intentions you want.

THEN, pick one or two things that you feel like you can WIN at and start taking step by step action to achieving it.

It doesn’t need to be perfect.

It doesn’t need to be everything all at once.

In fact, I would prefer it wasn’t.

Monday, June 1st.

If there wasn’t a better time to start making the change you’ve wanted...well then, that’s ok.

Because I also don’t want you to be married to the first.
To Monday
To next month.

Why?

Because if you don’t start today and you wanted too, what are you going to feel?
  • Guilt.
  • Shame
  • Frustration
  • Overwhelm
  • Failure

My message to you today is, don’t wait for the “perfect” time. Because there isn’t one.

Imperfect action beats perfect inaction every time.

If you need help with discovering and eliminating the overwhelm with this, send me a DM and let’s chat!

Rebecca
